Hawks at Grizzlies: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks
Prediction
Grizzlies 124, Hawks 114
Money line (ML)
The Hawks looked worthy of their preseason hype in their first game of the season when they crushed the Chicago Bulls 124-104 as 2-point road favorites. Trae Young torched the Bulls for a game-high 37 points on 10-for-12 from the field, and 5-for-6 in threes, with 6 rebounds and 7 assists.
Memphis lost its season-opener at home to the San Antonio Spurs 131-119 as 2-point favorites despite an amazing Ja Morant performance. The reigning NBA Rookie of the Year dropped 44 points on 18 of 27 shootings with 9 assists.
The Grizzlies won and covered in both games against the Hawks last season, which included 17- and 39-point beatdowns. Young struggled in both outings: He had under 20 points in each, shot below 30% from the field, including just 1-of-14 from three, and a combined 12 turnovers in both games.
Atlanta being without its two best defensive guards is going to be a problem vs. Morant who can get to the rim at will. Also, Grizzlies C Jonas Valančiūnas was a nightmare for the Hawks last season: Valančiūnas averaged 21 points, 16 rebounds with a 175 offensive efficiency rating and made 80% of his field goals. Furthermore, who knows how effective Atlanta’s new big, Clint Capela, who is battling an Achilles’ injury, can be, but he will most likely suit up.
GIMME GRIZZLIES (-120) for 1.5 units.
Against the spread (ATS)
PASS ON THE SPREAD. I’d rather pay the extra 10 cents on the dollar than lay 1.5 points with the Grizzlies.
Over/Under (O/U)
Both Hawks-Grizzlies games last season went Under the total, and that mostly falls on an Atlanta team that only averaged 94.5 points in those games. The Hawks had the fourth-highest percentage of Overs last season and had a leisurely 124 in their first game.
Atlanta will almost definitely play with more crispness on offense in this game against a Memphis team that got rolled by the Spurs Wednesday and was 21st in opponent’s points per game last year.
I “LEAN” OVER 236.5 (-115) for a quarter-unit.
