Athlon breaks down the Big Ten with predictions (and bowl hopes for Rutgers football)

Rutgers football is projected by Athlon Sports for a sixth-place finish in the Big Ten.

Athlon has their projections for the Big Ten out and for Rutgers football, it isn’t bad news. In fact, there is a glimmer of hope in the predictions for the fall.

The projections from Athlon are in line for most conventional wisdom about how the deepest division in college football will play out. Rutgers is sixth in the Athlon projections, behind fifth-place Maryland and Indiana (who are last in the division).

Ohio State leads the projections followed by Michigan, Michigan State and then Penn State.

If Rutgers football is to make some progress this season and be bowl eligible outright (last season the Scarlet Knights were in the Gator Bowl via Texas A&M having to pull out due to COVID-19 issues within the program), then Athlon says one thing will have to improve.

It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who follows the Big Ten.

“Contending for six wins and a bowl trip isn’t out of the question this fall but marked improvement on offense is needed.”

The quarterback battle between Noah Vedral and Gavin Wimsatt is an issue that Athlon says will need to be settled.

Athlon likes the Rutgers defense, especially with a secondary that is returning Kessawn Abraham and Avery Young.
