Well, it’s finally happening — Assassin’s Creed is heading to the land of the rising sun.
On Saturday, Ubisoft announced an all-new Assassin’s Creed codenamed Red, the next mainline series title that’ll be set in feudal Japan. It’s an open-world RPG affair with Ubisoft Quebec handling development. Jonathan Dumont, best known for writing Immortals Fenyx Rising and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, will serve as creative director on Red.
The teaser trailer for Red doesn’t reveal much. We can see a stealthy figure landing on some pagoda-like rooftops. It’s probably not in-engine footage since there’s a reddish stylized background, though. Check out the teaser for yourself below.

It’s still a work-in-progress game, as Ubisoft didn’t reveal much beyond these light details. Marc-Alexis Côté, vice president and executive producer on the Assassin’s Creed series, did acknowledge that players have been aching for this setting.
“Red [is] our next premium flagship title and the future of our open-world RPG Assassin’s Creed games,” Côté said during the broadcast. “It will let players explore one of their most awaited settings ever on the franchise feudal Japan and do live a very powerful Shinobi fantasy.”
For ages, fans have wanted an Assassin’s Creed game set in ancient Japan. Ghost of Tsushima was probably the closest thing to scratch that itch for a while.
Along with Red, Ubisoft also properly revealed Assassin’s Creed Haven and several other titles during its Ubisoft Forward event.
