Arkansas’ Nick Smith Jr. issues statement on 2023 NBA draft

Smith averaged 12.5 points, 1.7 assists and 1.6 rebounds in 17 games on 33.8% shooting from 3-point range.

Arkansas guard Nick Smith Jr. announced Thursday on social media that he is declaring for the 2023 NBA draft after one season with the Razorbacks.

Smith averaged 12.5 points, 1.7 assists and 1.6 rebounds in 17 games on 33.8% shooting from 3-point range. He missed extensive time due to a right knee injury but played in each of Arkansas’ last 12 games after returning to the lineup on Feb. 11 versus Mississippi State.

Upon returning, Smith put up his best stretch of the season.

He scored in double figures in seven straight games, averaging 18.1 points, 2.6 assists, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals over that stretch. He shot 37.5% from 3-point range on 5.7 attempts per game and looked to be the player that was ranked third in his recruiting class.

Despite a down freshman campaign, Smith is still projected to be a lottery pick. He has elite athleticism and is highly touted for his ability as a scorer and passer. He flourishes in the paint and can often convert difficult looks at the rim.

He will need to improve as a defender and will likely need to prove himself to teams during the pre-draft process after missing much of the year. However, for teams drafting in the lottery, Smith would be a welcomed addition given his offensive repertoire and potential.

Underclassmen have until April 23 to declare for the draft.
