Arkansas needs more from KJ Jefferson against LSU

KJ Jefferson should be healthier against LSU. He’ll have to be better, too.

A look at KJ Jefferson’s final stat line Saturday against Liberty would suggest a mixed game. They wouldn’t be all that wrong.

But a mixed game isn’t something Arkansas football can afford anymore and especially not in Week 11 when LSU visits Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in the Battle For the Boot.

Jefferson went 23 for 37 for 284 yards in the loss against the Flames. He threw two touchdowns, too. The issue? Two interceptions and a first half that wasn’t good enough to overcome. Part of that, it turned out, was his not feeling so hot.

Coach Sam Pittman admitted after the game that Jefferson didn’t throw at all during the week’s practices leading up to kickoff. Jefferson looked accordingly rusty with overthrows, underthrows and throws completely off-line coming with enough regularity to frustrate Arkansas’ faithful.

Pittman was more positive about his quarterback’s week of prep ahead of LSU on Saturday.

“I think he feels better this week than he did last week,”[mm-video type=playlist id=01fc3h383th881vsf1 player_id=none image=https://razorbackswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png] Pittman said. “I expect him to be able to throw today. If that’s the case, I feel like he’s be fine by Saturday.”

He will have to be. LSU is coming off a victory against Alabama, a team that handled Arkansas easily in Week 5. The last thing a 5-4 Razorbacks team with an under-pressure coach needs is another blowout loss. It could spell doom for more than just the 2022 season.
