After a 37-0 shellacking at the hands of Georgia on Saturday, there will be some hand-wringing across the state of Arkansas on Sunday.
Paul Myerberg at USA Today placed the Razorbacks among the ‘Losers’ of Week 5 in college football in his Sunday column.
Both the coaches poll and media poll will arrive later Sunday and the Hogs are sure to fall from their rankings of No. 11 and No. 8, respectively. Georgia, on the other hand, could poach some first-place votes from top-ranked Alabama, although the Crimson Tide should likely keep a comfortable overall edge.
Arkansas was hardly the only highly-ranked SEC to have a rough week. Tenth-ranked Florida lost to Kentucky. Texas A&M fell for a second consecutive week, this time to Mississippi State. Ole Miss barely looked the part against Alabama. LSU, which wasn’t ranked, lost at home to Auburn. Heck, even Vanderbilt needed a drive in the closing seconds to kick a game-winning field goal to beat Connecticut, arguably the worst team in college football the last decade.
In fairness to Myerberg, he isn’t saying the Hogs are losers overall. It’s just that the gap between the Razorbacks – no matter how magical their early-season run was – and the cream of the crop is a lot wider than lots of folks wanted to admit before the game.
The Razorbacks may be Losers from Week 5, but they’re hardly alone. And, honestly, they aren’t likely to stay there for a long period of time.
