Arkansas All-American up for National Player of the Year

No one in Arkansas history has quite had a season like this.

[autotag]Danielle Gibson[/autotag] is having a season for the ages for [autotag]Arkansas softball[/autotag].

Just three weeks after she was among the 25 semifinalists for USA Softball’s National Player of the Year award, she was named one of 10 finalists on Wednesday.

Gibson has the resume of an all-timer. She is the only SEC player among the 10. She is sixth in the country with a .451 batting average and top-five in the league in both home runs (16) and RBI (54). Earlier this year, she set Arkansas records for all-time RBI and total bases in a career. The senior first baseman is also second in school history with 44 career homers.

The national polls took note of her over the weekend as Arkansas is ranked in the top-five in all four major college softball polls. The Diamond Hogs (39-8, 17-4) won the SEC over the weekend by sweeping South Carolina and still have a final regular-season series to play.

The award field will narrow to a final three on May 18 and the winner will be announced before the start of the College World Series, which begins June 2 in Oklahoma City.
