As we inch closer to the college football season set to kick off on Sept. 12, we ask are the Texas Longhorns a top 10 team? Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports believes they are. He recently ranked all 76 teams that are set to play college football this year.
His top ten teams:
- Clemson
- Alabama
- Georgia
- Oklahoma
- Notre Dame
- Florida
- LSU
- Texas
- Central Florida
- North Carolina
Is it a true belief that the Texas Longhorns are a top ten team or is it that this football team is habitually overhyped? Well the team did finish in the top 15 in both the Amway Coaches poll and the AP poll. Many feel that Texas could be on their way up with essentially a whole new staff.

The Longhorns schedule using Myerberg’s rankings
Date | Team | Ranking |
Sept. 12 | UTEP | 76th |
Sept. 26 | Texas Tech | 43rd |
Oct. 3 | TCU | 21st |
Oct. 10 | Oklahoma | 4th |
Oct. 24 | Baylor | 50th |
Oct. 31 | Oklahoma State | 12th |
Nov. 7 | West Virginia | 35th |
Nov. 21 | Kansas | 67th |
Nov. 28 | Iowa Sate | 23rd |
Dec. 5 | Kansas State | 31st |
According to the rankings, Texas will face four opponents in the top 25. Obviously their biggest games come in October with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Iowa State will be another key game that comes in late November. For Texas to return to the Big 12 Championship game they likely need to go 2-1 or 3-0 in those games. A losing record could derail their hopes of playing for the Big 12 title in 2020.
We are just two weeks away from the opening game against the bottom ranked UTEP Miners. Following the opener Texas will have a week off before traveling to Lubbock to take on the Red Raiders at Jones AT&T Stadium.
