During a segment on a recent Cover 3 College Football Podcast, CBS Sports college football analyst Chip Patterson said he believed the Wisconsin Badgers would be the next program to win their first national championship.

The other two choices, as seen above, were the Oregon Ducks and the North Carolina Tarheels.

Here’s what Patterson had to say about the Badgers’ chances in the upcoming years:

“I think there’s about 5-6 schools at the power-five level that have been successful, that have flirted with like top five, top 10 contention, but Wisconsin has been in Rose Bowls, Wisconsin has been stringing together double-digit win (seasons).

“The gap between the consistency of Wisconsin and winning a national championship — even as I didn’t pick them as one of the next 11 teams to make the college football playoff — I realize that seems like crossing the wires a little bit, but I treated them as different conversations. I just thought that seemed a little more realistic.

“Wisconsin, recently, has shown up to the Big Ten Championship Game 12-0 with a chance to make the college football playoff. That’s my pick.”

Read this analysis and then look at who is joining the Wisconsin program in the coming years. I’m with Patterson on this one. Given the program’s trajectory, track record of success, easy division and incoming stars they can easily be the next team to win their first national championship.

This conversation all happened along with one, though, about what teams will make the playoff in the next six years. The analysts did not believe Wisconsin to be one of them.

Take the back-and-forth of Patterson as you will, but look at the big picture to see that the Badgers might not be as far off from the playoff and a national title than we think.
