Anthony Richardson officially drops ‘AR-15’ nickname

It’s official, Anthony Richardson is no longer “AR-15.” But he still has a cannon attached to his shoulder.

On Monday, it became apparent that Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson was looking to distance himself from the “AR-15” nickname college football fans have to come to know him by. Sunday afternoon, Richardson released a statement officially announcing the rebranding. He would now like to be referred to as “AR” or his full name.

The impetus for this rebrand is simple. AR-15-style rifles have appeared time and time again as the weapon of choice for many mass shooters in America. The gun, while not an assault rifle by definition, is well-known for its immense power. It’s not the first time a quarterback’s arm has been compared to a gun, but Richardson no longer wants to bear that weight on his shoulders… literally.

As part of the AR-15 brand, Richardson sold apparel with the nickname plastered across the chest and scopes on each shoulder. He says he’s looking to replace that logo as the transition commences.

While the decision is sure to be met with varying perspectives, the only one that matters is Richardson’s. He’s made it clear that he’s dropping the nickname to avoid any association with the rifle and condoned the mass shootings.

There are those who will continue to use the nickname regardless of this announcement. Many will be simply repeating the sobriquet made popular by the exciting athlete, but there will be those who use it against his wishes intentionally. Keeping the No. 15 won’t make the process any easier, but this statement should help speed things up.
