Former Florida quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] is officially an Indianapolis Colt and is turning heads at offseason organized team activities (OTAs), according to Colts Wire.
He’s been splitting first-team reps with veteran Gardner Minshew, but Richardson is at a disadvantage as he makes the transition from college to the pros. Richardson only made 13 starts at Florida, and now he has to learn everything there is to know about the Colts’ playbook.
Head coach Shane Steichen knows that he’s asking a lot of relatively inexperienced quarterback, but things are looking good so far.
“You know what, he’s done a really nice job. I’ve been really pleased with where he’s at mentally,” Steichen told the media Thursday. “He made some big plays today on the football field. He made some great throws, great decisions – some really next-level stuff that I’ve seen over the last couple of days. I’m really pleased with where he’s at.”
Steichen has praised Richardson for his coachability, but there is still a lot of work to do before the first week of the season.
“I think he’s taken on the coaching really well and understanding the rhythm and the timing of the passing game and what we’re trying to get accomplished, and he’s done a nice job.”
The early returns are encouraging from Richardson, but there is still a lot of time before the Colts decide whether he’s ready to take over the offense or not. Two more weeks of OTAs and a mandatory minicamp should provide a better picture of where he’s at before the summer break.
