Another report has identified the Green Bay Packers as one of the teams interested in quarterback prospect Jordan Love.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Packers are among several teams “doing varying levels of homework” on Love, a potential first-round pick in the 2020 draft.
Love has already met with the Packers virtually.
Fowler reports seven NFL head coaches have specifically called Matt Wells, who coached Love at Utah State, about the quarterback. It stands to reason that Packers coach Matt LaFleur was one of the callers.
Wells believes teams are trying to “get the complete story” on Love, who played himself onto the NFL’s radar with a standout junior season only to suffer through statistical regression in many important categories in 2019.
Last season, Love threw 20 touchdown passes but also 17 interceptions, and his both his completion percentage and yards per attempt average fell by a couple of points. Utah State went 11-2 in 2018 but finished just 7-6 in 2019, including blowout losses to LSU, Air Force, BYU and Boise State.
Love’s talent and potential are obvious. He looks the part, standing 6-4 with above-average athleticism at the position and a terrific arm.
Lance Zierlein of NFL.com summed up Love’s evaluation nicely: “His size, mobility and arm talent combined with his 2018 flashes could be a winning hand that leads a team into the future or a siren’s song of erratic play and unfulfilled potential.”
Love could benefit from sitting behind an established player at quarterback, like Aaron Rodgers, which is why some have pinpointed the Packers as an ideal landing spot for the talented young passer.
The Packers could invest in a potential long-term future at quarterback anytime, although are is myriad reasons why they should on using a high pick at the position.
