The Colorado Buffaloes are 3-2 and have lost back-to-back games. However, quarterback Shedeur Sanders has seamlessly transitioned from Jackson State to Boulder.
His numbers are impressive, and he emerged as a Heisman Trophy candidate early, although the Buffs’ past couple of games haven’t gone their way.
Surprisingly, one Pac-12 assistant coach, who remains anonymous, believes Sanders is taking sacks on purpose to preserve his completion percentage (h/t The Athletic — subscription required):
“They really had some tells,” the anonymous Pac-12 coach told The Athletic. “I think they want to rack up some stats for Shedeur. He really holds on to the ball a long time. I think he takes sacks because he doesn’t want to affect his completion percentage. He’s playing a little different than he did earlier in the season. Before he showed that he was willing to step up and escape through the B-gaps. Now, he’s retreating more.”
That’s definitely quite the strange take.
Through five games, Sanders has completed a career-high 74.8% of his throws to go along with 15 touchdown passes and two interceptions. He has been sacked 25 times.
