Andy Landers to be inducted into Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame.

KNOXVILLE — A Southeastern Conference coaching legend will soon be inducted into the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame.

While former University of Georgia women’s basketball coach Andy Landers never coached at the University of Tennessee, he has deep roots in the Volunteer State.

A Maryville native, Landers attended Tennessee Tech University where he earned a degree in physical education. He graduated in 1974.

His first coaching job was at Roane State Community College in Harriman. He coached there between 1975-79, compiling an 82-21 record.

From there, he moved to Georgia. In Athens, he was Vince Dooley’s first hire as athletic director.

Landers, a women’s basketball Hall of Famer, coached the Bulldogs until he retired in 2015. He won 866 games at Georgia. His teams won seven SEC regular season championships and four SEC tournament titles.

He was the SEC Coach of the Year three times and named NCAA Coach of the Year on four occasions.

The induction ceremony will be held remotely on July 21 and broadcast on WBXX-TV.
