Andy Katz keeps Auburn at No. 1 in ‘Power 37’ ahead of SEC play

Katz calls Auburn “the best team in the country entering the new year.”

Auburn basketball is on fire by boasting a 6-1 record against “quad-1” competition through 12 games. According to Andy Katz of Turner Spots, the Tigers will hold the honor of being the nation’s best team as the calendar flips to 2025.

Auburn checks in at No. 1 of this week’s “Power 37” ranking from Katz, beating out Tennessee, Iowa State, Duke, and Florida for the top spot. Katz calls Auburn “the best team in the country entering the new year” after rolling to 12 wins with a +23 margin of victory. Auburn has also grabbed two wins against teams listed in Katz’s rankings: Houston and Memphis.

Auburn will have a chance to earn its third victory over a Katz 37 team this Saturday against Missouri. The Missouri Tigers, who have already exceeded its 2023-24 win total, checks in at No. 29 this week. Missouri lost all 18 SEC games last en route to an 8-24 record. The Tigers will begin the week at 10-2, with a win over No. 7 Kansas on its resume. Katz feels that Missouri could claim the biggest turnaround of any team this season.

Before Saturday’s showdown between Auburn and Missouri, Auburn will face Monmouth on Monday to close out non-SEC play. The home-standing Tigers have a 99% chance to beat Monmouth on Monday according to ESPN’s matchup predictor.
