North Carolina guard RJ Davis is back for his fifth and final season in Chapel Hill, taking advantage of his extra COVID-19 season. Davis is fresh off his best season with the Tar Heels, winning the ACC Player of the Year and establishing himself as one of the best players in the country.
But going into this season, one analyst believes Davis isn’t the top guard in college basketball.
On Friday, Andy Katz released his list of the best guards for the 2024-25 season and while Davis is high on the list, he’s not number one. Instead, Katz ranked Rutgers freshman Dylan Harper as the top guard in the country.

Thats a shocking choice.
It’s nothing against Harper who was one of the top players in the 2024 recruiting class but to have him over established guards like Davis and Alabama’s Mark Sears is surprising. Harper may turnout to be the best guard in the country eventually but Katz is making a very bold statement with this list.
Davis averaged 21.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game last season helping lead the Tar Heels to an ACC regular season title and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. He will hope to get UNC a little further this year after a Sweet 16 loss.
And who knows, maybe UNC will meet Harper and Rutgers at some point this season.
