Kansas City Chiefs OL Andrew Wylie has renegotiated his contract for the 2021 NFL season.
As first reported by Over The Cap’s Jason Fitzgerald, Wylie has agreed to renegotiate his contract. This isn’t a contract restructure, though. No money was converted to a signing bonus. No new years were added, meaning he’ll still be a free agent in 2022. Instead, Wylie will simply earn less than he previously would have on his original round contract tender.
Wylie was set to earn a non-guaranteed $2.133 million after signing his restricted free agent tender back in May. His new deal will earn him $1.2 million on the year with $920K of the contract fully guaranteed per Fitzgerald.
This deal essentially guarantees Wylie’s spot on the roster as the team would have to burn salary cap space in order to release him. It also ensures that the team carries over enough money into the regular season to cover the various transactions they’ll need to make during the year.
With the salary cap rules for the 53-man roster now in play, Fitzgerald estimates the Chiefs have around $3 million in effective cap space for the year. The NFLPA public salary cap report has yet to be updated to reflect the 53-man roster and the moves the team made to get down to 53 players.
Needless to say, it’s a pretty solid move by Wylie to take less than he would have earned on restricted free agent tender. It’s clear that he wants to be part of this team and do anything possible to help ensure its success.
