Andrew Wiggins could emerge as a potential trade chip for the Warriors

The Golden State Warriors could be tempted into trading Andrew Wiggins following his slow start to the season.

Andrew Wiggins has endured a difficult start to the 2023-24 season. His shot isn’t falling at its usual rate, and his wing defense has fallen short of his usual lofty standards.

As such, Wiggins has found himself coming off the Golden State Warriors bench in recent weeks as Steve Kerr searches for a balance that can spur the team to a winning run.

According to Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, the Warriors have softened their stance on Wiggins’ trade availability this season. While it’s unlikely the front office will actively shop the championship-winning wing, it’s also doubtful they wouldn’t be willing to explore potential trades that included him as part of the overall package.

“Though I’ve said in the past that the Warriors might be reluctant to trade Wiggins so soon after he signed a relatively bargain-rate contract extension specifically so he could remain with this team, I’ve since heard that this would not be a major barrier for the Warriors to explore Wiggins’ trade market,” Kawakami wrote. “Especially if he can’t play with Kuminga and the Warriors decide that Kuminga is their full-time small forward.”

Wiggins is averaging 12.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. He is shooting 42.4% from the field and 30% from 3-point range. His role within the rotation has taken another hit due to the emergence of Jonathan Kuminga, who brings a higher level of energy and is arguably a better all-around athlete.

Despite his struggles, it’s worth remembering Wiggins was a key part of the Warriors 2022 championship run. He’s likely earned some goodwill within the franchise due to his performances that season.

However, if he’s not producing at that level and a significant trade package presents itself, it makes sense Mike Dunleavy Jr. would entertain it. After all, Golden State came into the season with hopes of competing for another championship, and that has to be the goal.
