Andrew Vorhees’ NFL journey begins with lessons and a lifelong memory

The Ravens didn’t triumph over the Chiefs, but Andrew Vorhees achieved a real triumph over injury and adversity. No one deserves this opportunity more.

Andrew Vorhees didn’t get a win in his NFL regular-season debut with the Baltimore Ravens, but the fact that Vorhees was on the field, in uniform, as a starter is a special memory he will treasure forever. In 2023, while doing offensive lineman drills at the NFL scouting combine, Vorhees went down with a torn ACL, making his draft stock drop from possibly late Day 2 to the end of Day 3. Vorhees faced a long and difficult injury recovery process. His career was immediately thrown into question. Young athletes suffering major injuries is such a devastating reality, the saddest part of professional sports. We all wondered if Vorhees would be able to become an NFL starter. It wasn’t a question of quality. We knew how great he was at USC. The question was if his body would cooperate.

Fast forward to Thursday night in Kansas City against the Chiefs: There he was, former USC offensive lineman Andrew Vorhees, starting on the Ravens’ offensive line. He was drafted by the Ravens in the seventh round as the No. 229 overall pick.

He was out for the 2023 season due to recovering from the injury but now will try and help lead the Ravens to a Super Bowl; they have been knocking on the door the past few seasons.

Voorhees is the Baltimore Ravens’ starting offensive guard. In Week 1 in primetime against the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, Vorhees immediately received a top test. The Baltimore offensive line struggled to protect Lamar Jackson. The Chiefs, however, have one of the best defensive lines in the league.

As the league’s best rushing team last season, the Baltimore Ravens’ offensive line obviously plays a huge part in their success. Baltimore did move on from three of last season’s starters — left guard John Simpson, right guard Kevin Zeitler and right tackle Morgan Moses — but general manager Eric DeCosta is still excited about Vorhees and the overall unit up front.

DeCosta told reporters, “I’m excited about Andrew Vorhees. I’m excited for the future. We may have a couple of hiccups along the way, but I think we’ve started to build from the bottom up, and I think this year, we’ll be in a great place.”

Throughout his six seasons (2017-22) as a collegiate player, Vorhees played in 55 games and made 48 starts for the Trojans.

In 2022, he was named to the AP and PFF All-America First Teams. He also earned placement on the 2022 All-Pac-12 First Team and the Phil Steele All-Pac-12 First Team.

We wish Andrew Vorhees the best as he fights on and overcomes injury to achieve a dream of starting in the NFL.
