And there is the matter of speaking out. Mitchell is among the chorus of not only players, but coaches — of all races — demanding justice for the family of Breonna Taylor, an African-American slain by police in Louisville, Ky., and more broadly pleading for an end to systemic racism. “I think like at the end of the day, the money we make, the fame, that’s cool, but I want to be able to tell my kids, my grandkids that I was part of something bigger than just that,” Mitchell said. “I think that’s really where this comes into play because, I think we have some of the greatest players and the greatest people in the world, in this sport, and we all, I feel like, do a great job of speaking what we need to speak on and being able to continue to bring attention to what’s needed. “And I think for me, being able to tell my kids and my grandkids that your dad was someone who would not sit back and go quiet.”
