The Kansas City Chiefs are going through it, and it’s frankly remarkable to watch.
Sunday’s 20-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills could’ve just been a bog-standard fifth defeat for a team that doesn’t appear to be Super Bowl caliber. Most any other team would’ve accepted the bed they’re lying in. Instead, thanks to a controversial (but correct) offsides call on Kadarius Toney, we not only got fantastic Taylor Swift jokes, but we also received a true NFL rarity: a Patrick Mahomes temper tantrum.
Hoo buddy, it’s been a good while since we got one of these.
First, Mahomes said he’s never seen an offsides get called on a receiver in his entire career. OK, so that means they shouldn’t call it if it’s egregious?
Patrick Mahomes: “I’ve played seven years in the National Football League and never had offensive offsides called.”
“You want until a minute left to make a call like that?”
Mahomes said he asked three refs for an explanation. Got none.
“Let us play the game.”

Then, after ranting and raving, Mahomes tried to make a point that the offsides call somehow diminished Travis Kelce’s Hall of Fame resume. Folks, Kelce is one of the greatest tight ends of all time, maybe even the best ever. He’s walking into Canton, Ohio as a First-Ballot Hall of Famer with zero skepticism.
So, uh, yeah, Mahomes was being a tad (very) overdramatic:

I’ve never seen Mahomes this upset. It’s to the point where even his arguments hold little merit or logic. This is probably just related to the offside call, but it wouldn’t be wild to think Mahomes’ overall frustrations with the Chiefs’ 2023 season are playing a role, too.
Nonetheless, this is Hall of Fame-level whining by Mahomes.
