Former MW teams face off.

The next matchup in our face off for Mountain West basketball supremacy features a pair of former Mountain West teams in BYU’s 2010 vs. 2009 Utah which made it to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

That ’10 Cougar team featured Jimmer Fredette, a year before he really took off, and that ’09 Ute team.

Looking at the numbers, BYU is clearly the better team. That’s not to say Utah is a slouch, but the Cougars defense is barely worse than Utah’s defense and Utah is a defensive team.

BYU’s offense is leaps and bounds better than Utah’s. BYU can’t match Utah’s size in 7’2” center Luke Nevill though. Utah also has much more experience on their team. Will BYU’s run and gun offense carry them to a victory, or will Utah’s size and defense fluster the cougars?

Keys for Utah: Pound the ball inside to finish at the rim and draw fouls; bother Jimmer Fredette. He uses a third of the team’s possessions so they go as he goes.

Keys for BYU: Run Utah’s big men off the court, once they’re gone, defend the rim, Utah is an average outside shooting team.

Game 1: Marriott Center, Series tied 0-0.

Game 2- Marriott Center, BYU leads series 1-0.

Utah takes home court advantage after game 2.

Game 3: Jon M. Huntsman Center, Series tied 1-1.

Utah holds BYU to 27% shooting from deep, and takes the lead in the series.

Game 4: Jon M. Huntsman Center, Utah leads series 2-1.

BYU takes back home court advantage in game 4 behind a monster effort from Jimmer Fredette.

Game 5: Marriott Center, Series tied 2-2

Utah gets 26 points from Tyler Kepay coming off the bench, which gives them the opportunity to win the series in their own arena.

Game 6-  Jon M. Huntsman Center, Utah leads series 3-2

Utah frustrates Jimmer Fredette and comes away with the W. #14 Utah upsets #3 BYU and moves on to the second round.
