If there’s a harder-luck receiver in his era in terms of the quarterbacks attempting to get the ball anywhere near him than Chicago’s Allen Robinson, it would be hard to name him. The Jaguars selected Robinson in the second round of the 2014 draft out of Penn State (where his quarterbacks were Matt McGloin and Christian Hackenberg), and sent Robinson on an odyssey with Blake Bortles as his main signal-caller. Robinson somehow led the league in receiving touchdowns in his second season with 14, but it was a hard go most of the time.
Then, Robinson signed a three-year, $42 million contract with the Bears before the 2018 season. He did so with the full understanding that his quarterback would be Mitchell Trubisky, taken with the second overall pick in the 2017 draft. This has led to all kinds of catch radius challenges, cemetery balls, and instances in which Chicago’s opponents had a better shot at the ball than Robinson ever did.
If you want a litany of the crimes committed against Robinson in Chicago, here’s an unbelievably great video from Lorin Cox, who writes for Bears Wire and works in Chicago radio.

After a Week 1 game in which he caught five passes on nine targets for 74 yards and no touchdowns while Trubisky threw three fourth-quarter touchdown passes to other targets after Detroit’s secondary was too pooped to pop, Robinson reacted like a guy who had finally had enough.

Robinson is a free agent after the 2020 season, and one can’t imagine he’ll stick around no matter who Chicago’s quarterback is in 2021. It’s time for the Bears to be an angel and give Mr. Robinson a new and better home.
On Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported that Robinson has become frustrated with the progress of a new contract. Per Pelissero, Robinson feels that he has been disrespected, and that the offers from the Bears to this point have not reflected his fair market value. We’ll see how that goes, but the best bet for Robinson might just be to play out his current contract in Rod Tidwell fashion, and move on to greener pastures.
