All-American LB Dave Hoffmann named honorary captain for Eastern Michigan game

All-American linebacker Dave Hoffmann will take the field with the Washington Huskies in Week Two.

Coach Jedd Fisch said he would start some new traditions as Washington’s head coach, and one of them is naming an honorary captain to take the field with the team each week.

Former All-American linebacker Dave Hoffmann drew those honors for Week Two when the Huskies face off against the Eastern Michigan Eagles.

The member of Washington’s 1991 national championship team and two-time first-team All-American will return to Montlake, and while he may be wearing purple and gold, his brother Steve, a former defensive lineman at Washington, will be in green and white cheering on the Eagles.

Steve’s son, Gabe, is a redshirt freshman at Eastern Michigan. Sports run deep in the family at Washington. Gabe’s mother, Heidi, played basketball for the Huskies, and her sister, Molly, is married to former Husky quarterback Brock Huard.

Hoffmann was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1993 before he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he played that season.

His career ended soon after that, as he was plagued by injuries sustained from the brutal and lethal tackling he was known for during his time at Washington.

Hoffmann’s life took a different direction when the Secret Service arranged an interview with him after applying for a position with the police department. He spent several decades with the agency protecting both Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
