Povetkin vs. Whyte: Tale of the tape

Alexander Povetkin

The 41-year-old Povetkin (36-2-1, 25 KOs) dropped Whyte at Matchroom Fight Camp in the first meeting Aug. 22, recording a fifth-round KO victory with a jab-upper cut combo that ended up with Whyte knocked out cold. So Povetkin is a heavy underdog in the rematch? Well, the result doesn’t always tell the tale. Many talking heads had it scored with Whyte winning all four rounds, including a pair of knockdowns in the fourth round. So the books have Povetkin as the ‘dog since he is still 2-1-1 across his past four fights, and he just hasn’t been the dominant fighter he once was. Nine months later, and well past his 40th birthday, the skills are expected to be even more diminished.

Dillian Whyte

Whyte (27-2, 18 KOs) is looking to bounce back after that lucky jab-upper cut combo ended up with the setback last time out. He gets a chance at atonement, and the 32-year-old is expected to do just that. Whyte hadn’t lost in 11 straight fights dating back to Dec. 12, 2015, since being dropped by Anthony Joshua. The younger fighter, as mentioned above, was winning all four of the first rounds, and he looked like he was nearing a finish himself, controlling the tempo from the jump. Whyte is nine years younger than Povetkin, who was much slower in the first outing.

Povetkin vs. Whyte: Odds, predictions and picks

Whyte (-350) is expected to exact revenge in this one, and he’ll do just that if he can control the tempo and avoid the lucky kill-shot like the first installment. A Whyte win could also set up the potential of a trilogy, although Povetkin is getting a little long in the tooth. Still, playing Whyte straight on the 3-way line is a little risky at three-and-a-half times your potential return.

The better action on this fight is rolling with WHYTE BY KO/TKO, TECHNICAL DECISION OR DQ (-165). He was handling himself with aplomb in the first battle, and he had a pair of knockdowns in the first round, and he looked to be close to a finish before Povetkin flipped the script. It won’t happen again.

In addition, I like individual round betting, and it’s a good strategy to highlight a three-round block. WHYTE IN ROUND 6 (+1100), WHYTE IN ROUND 7 (+1100) and WHYTE IN ROUND 8 (+1200) are the rounds to highlight. Yes, you will lose two of the ends, but if Whyte gets the finish in Rounds 6-8 you’ll be well ahead.
