Alex Van Pelt reveals one factor standing in Drake Maye’s way

Alex Van Pelt had a simple reason for Drake Maye not seeing as many reps with the first-team offense

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt likes what rookie quarterback Drake Maye brings to the table. However, it’s still clear that the coaching staff views Jacoby Brissett as the current starter.

Brissett has played sparingly this preseason. He struggled in his last outing against the Philadelphia Eagles, going 3-of-10 passing for 17 yards and an interception.

After that performance, some have wondered why Maye hasn’t received as many reps with the first-team offense. Van Pelt had one simple answer for that question when speaking with media members on Thursday.

“Jacoby,” said Van Pelt.

Van Pelt did expand on his comments with the explanation that Brissett’s familiarity with the offense, as well as his ability to react in certain situations, were major factors that gave him an edge over Maye, as noted by MassLive’s Mark Daniels.

There is still the sense that the rookie is pushing Brissett, and his opportunity could come sooner rather than later if that trend continues.
