Monday marked the first of Alex Trebek’s final five episodes as host of Jeopardy! before he died in November after a long battle with cancer.
As the game show’s executive producer Mike Richards told Entertainment Weekly recently, Trebek walked out and delivered an incredible speech about the holiday season and the COVID-19 pandemic. We got to see it on Monday’s episode before the game started.
“I’d like you to open up your hands and open up your heart to those who are still suffering because of COVID-19,” he said at the opening of the episode. “People who are suffering through no fault of their own.”
“We’re trying to build a gentler, kinder society,” he continued, “and if we all pitch in just a little bit, we’re going to get there.”

It was a beautiful message and one we should all take to heart.
