The Washington Football Team might be on the verge of making an interesting name available in free agency for the Cincinnati Bengals.
From the sounds of it, Washington will cut quarterback Alex Smith loose this week — and the Bengals might want to take a look for Joe Burrow’s sake.
Smith, 36, might prefer to seek out a starting opportunity on the open market, but he could find a harsh reception there. His career-altering injury aside, the age and limited production since his return might limit his opportunities.
And if he has to settle for a backup role, why shouldn’t the Bengals take a look? The cast of Brandon Allen and Ryan Finley hasn’t impressed and Smith wouldn’t be too expensive if he’s forced into a backup role.
No, Burrow probably doesn’t need a “mentor” by now. He was a generational prospect after one of the best-ever college seasons and he looked great as a rookie.
But would such a move hurt? Not at all, and if Burrow misses time again, the Bengals would have a reliable veteran who can win games.
As always, other teams cutting players during a year that has a lower salary cap than normal could seriously help the Bengals if they get aggressive.
