With Mike Leach confirmed to be the next head coach at Mississippi State, Oklahoma defenesive coordinator Alex Grinch, who was the DC at Washington State from 2015-17, will be on the short list for the head coaching position for the Wildcats, per Football Scoop.
Leach signed a contract extension with Washington State in early December, but will now head to the SEC.
WSU’s defense saw massive improvement in various areas in Grinch’s tenure there. In 2015, they allowed 27.6 ppg, a drastic change from 38.6 the year before. He finished as a Broyles Award Nominee in both 2015 and 2016, the award given to the top assistant coach in the nation.
In 2018, Grinch joined Urban Meyer’s staff as the co-defensive coordinator for one year before he joined Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma.
With Oklahoma, Grinch helped the Sooners improve from No. 105 last season under Mike Stoops, to No. 34 this year according to Team Rankings. Last year they allowed 33.3 ppg to their opponent. Under Grinch they allowed 28.3.
