Alex Golesh was named head coach at South Florida on Dec. 4.
He served as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator and tight ends coach from 2021-22.
Golesh appeared on “The Jim Rome Show” Tuesday.
He said taking the USF head coaching job was part of a long plan.
“I’ve spent the last two summers, I spent time putting together a detailed plan,” he said. “I looked at what the first day would look like, what would the second day look like and what the first week would look like.
“I thought about what the first three hours would look like, what the first six hours would look like and what the first nine hours would look like.”
Golesh said he was committed to Tennessee and head coach Josh Heupel during the 2022 season.
“I asked not to talk to anybody until the season was over,” he said. “As soon as our last game was over and we beat Vanderbilt, my phone rang. It was my agent, and he said ‘are you ready?’ I said I just need to enjoy this.”
During the 2022 season, Tennessee finished 10-2 (6-2 SEC).
“I planned on staying and working with Josh,” Golesh said. “We flipped the program; we didn’t get to take that last step.”
Golesh inherits a South Florida program that won one game in 2022. The former Tennessee assistant coach discussed the challenge in rebuilding the Bulls’ program.
“I’m excited,” he said. “I’ve never chased a job, and I never interviewed for a job until this one.
“I always just wanted to do the best job I could, at the job I had, and not worry about the next one.”
USF kicks off its 2023 season Sept. 2 at Western Kentucky.
