50 years ago, Wendell Houston not only become a basketball star at Alabama, he was also the program’s first African American scholarship athlete as a member of the Alabama men’s basketball freshman.
Hudson played at Alabama from 1969- 1973, and his jersey will be the first jersey to ever hang in Coleman Coliseum.

Hudson averaged 19.0 points and 12.9 rebounds at Alabama. As a senior, he was named SEC player of the year by scoring 20.7 points and grabbing 12.1 rebounds.
Hudson was also the Alabama women’s basketball team head coach from 2008-13 where he had a 68-87 record.
The No. 20 jersey will still be available for players to wear.
Alabama also announced that a donor has endowed a men’s basketball scholarship in Hudson’s honor, and Alabama student-athletes would wear a “WH” patch for the remainder of the current winter and spring seasons.
