As the very unusual 2020 college football season kicks off, there are questions looming over which team is the best in the country, also, if that team can be considered legitimate with numerous conferences postponing their fall football seasons until the spring.
ESPN released their latest power rankings as most programs are getting ready to head into Week 1.
Alabama is at the top of their list as Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide get prepared to open their season against Missouri.
Chris Low of ESPN offers an explanation,
“By Alabama’s standards, it has been an eternity since the Crimson Tide last won a national championship — all the way back in 2017,” writes Low. “And, yes, we’re being facetious. We learned last season, though, that it is possible to have a College Football Playoff without the Crimson Tide. Don’t look for that to become a trend. Several key players on the NFL’s radar returned to school, including receiver DeVonta Smith and offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood, and there haven’t been any opt-outs. With a healthy Dylan Moses back at middle linebacker, this defense should also be much closer to what we’re used to seeing from one of Nick Saban’s defenses.”
The Crimson Tide is one of six SEC teams that appear inside the top ten.
