Alabama QB Bryce Young wins 2021 Heisman Trophy

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young has won the Heisman Trophy

Alabama sophomore quarterback Bryce Young won the Heisman Trophy, which was awarded Saturday in New York City.

Young topped other finalists, Michigan defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson and quarterbacks Kenny Pickett of Pitt and C.J. Stroud of Ohio State.

Young led Alabama to a 12-1 record and the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoffs. The Crimson Tide will play Cincinnati on Dec. 31 in the Cotton Bowl Classic.

Young’s statistical resume:

  • Completed 68.0% of his passes (314-462) for 4,322 yards with 43 touchdowns compared to just four interceptions
  • Second nationally and first in the conference for passing touchdowns
  • Third nationally in points responsible for (284), while ranking fifth in the country in passing efficiency (175.5)
  • Guided the Alabama offense to the No. 2 third-down conversion percentage in the nation (53.6 percent), completing 70.8 percent of his third-down pass attempts (80-113) for 1,329 yards and 14 touchdowns

Young joins Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, Mark Ingram, and Lamar Jackson as sophomores to win the Heisman.

Young becomes the fourth Alabama player to win the Heisman. And the Tide has taken it in back-to-back years. This is the fifth time the Heisman has gone to the same school in back-to-back years.

“The is amazing,” Young said. “…whenever you win an award like this it goes as an individual award but it is a team award.

Young praised head coach Nick Saban and Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien.

Wide receiver DeVonta Smith, now with the Philadelphia Eagles, won it in 2020.

In 2009, running back Mark Ingram, now a New Orleans Saint, won the award and current Tennessee Titans star RB Derrick Henry captured the Heisman in 2015.

Young received 684 first-place votes and received 83% of the total possible points. He led the way in each of the six regions.

Ohio State quarterback Stroud had the best suit.

Hutchinson didn’t win the Heisman hardware. However, his college coach believes his star defensive lineman will be the first overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft.

Young played high school ball at Mater Dei in California. He is the third Monarch QB to win the Heisman.

Young joins Matt Leinart and John Huarte and makes the Monarchs the only high school program with three Heisman winners. Young’s victory pushed Mater Dei past Wilson (Dallas), which claims Davey O’Brien (1938) and Tim Brown (1987).
