Alabama punter James Burnip officially declares for 2025 NFL draft

The Alabama punter is heading to the NFL.

After four seasons as the starting punter for the Alabama Crimson Tide, James Burnip officially announced his intentions Thursday afternoon to declare for the 2025 NFL draft.

Burnip, a redshirt senior, did not have any eligibility remaining, and now projects to be one of the top punters available in the 2025 NFL draft.

A native of Australia, Burnip has been Alabama’s starting punter since the 2021 season. Since, Burnip punted the ball a total of 203 times for 8,904 yards during his Alabama career, which translated to an average of 43.9 yards per punt.

During the 2024 season, Burnip had one of the best seasons of his career, punting 52 times for 2,359 yards with an average of 45.4 yards per punt. Prior to this past season, Burnip led the entire SEC with 2,806 punt yards, while also averaging a career-high 47.6 yards per punt.

Looking ahead, with it usually unlikely that punters get selected in the NFL draft, Burnip will certainly get picked up by a team as an undrafted free agent at-the-least.
