Alabama play-by-play announcer Eli Gold will miss the beginning of the 2022 season due to health issues. An announcement was made by Jim Carabin on Wednesday morning. Carabin is the vice president and general manager at Crimson Tide Sports Marketing.
Chris Stewart will fill in for Gold during his absence. Stewart has assisted Gold in the past and has been the play-by-play announcer for Alabama basketball and baseball.
Gold has served as the voice of Alabama football since 1988. He began his career with multiple weekly broadcasts called “Hey Coach” and “The Tide.” He would bring in the basketball and football coach every week to talk about the program and ask the coaches different questions about the program.
The Crimson Tide aren’t the only ones that have been blessed with Gold’s generational voice. He has also had different assignments with NASCAR, NHL and the NFL. Overall, he has been a broadcaster for 41 years. He did the play-by-play at Alabama for 400 straight games before he tested positive for COVID-19 in 2020.
Gold has also won countless awards during his sportscasting career. He has won Alabama Sportscaster of the Year four different times in his career. He has also won the Chris Schinkel Award in 2019 which is awarded by the NFL, which recognizes broadcasters for their ties to a specific school.
Details of Gold’s condition or how much time he could miss during the season have not been made public. Nonetheless, Alabama fans will be keeping Gold and his family in their thoughts as he powers through his health issues. Hopefully, Gold will be able to return to the booth in the near future.
