Alabama HC Nick Saban doesn’t release depth chart ahead of 2023 season for a reason

A Nick Saban video from last season resurfaced as the Tide don’t release a depth chart in 2023

For the first time in 17 years as the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Nick Saban has decided to not release a depth chart ahead of the season. Obviously, we have a pretty good idea who a lot of the starters will be, but Saban clearly has no intention of tipping his hand to opposing teams and doesn’t want to cause any extra drama in the locker room.

Saban alluded to this a year ago when he said at a press conference that the 2022 depth chart could very well be the last one he ever releases. It seems to cause more trouble than good as Saban said.

“My biggest issue on our whole team was the day our depth chart came out. So you all may have seen the last one (depth chart)… We have competition on our team, we have good players.”

For the fans and spectators, it is a great way to get to know the backups and who potential replacements are, but from Saban’s perspective, it just causes a rift in the team. Position battles can continue all season long and jobs can still be won or lost. Just because you were the RB2 on the depth chart doesn’t guarantee you any sort of snaps. Saban has shown time and time again that he will always make the best decision for the team, no matter how unpopular. This is the same guy who threw a true freshman QB into the national title game at halftime. When everyone zigs, he zags.
