The Alabama Crimson Tide women’s basketball team is on the move in this week’s USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll following their big nonconference road win over the Michigan State Spartans.
Alabama (12-1 overall) roses three spots to No. 21 in this week’s coaches poll, released Tuesday, after handing previously 15th-ranked Michigan State its first loss of the season, 82-67 in the West Palm Beach Classic in Florida last Friday.
Aaliyah Nye scored 18 points and Zaay Green added 17 in the win over the Spartans. Alabama’s 12-1 start equals its best since 2016-17. Kristy Curry’s team also defeated the Richmond Spiders in Florida on Saturday, 75-68. They’ll welcome the Jacksonville Dolphins to Coleman Coliseum on Sunday for an 11 a.m CT start (ESPN+).
Alabama remained at No. 20 in this week’s AP Top 25 poll.
The UCLA Bruins remained atop the coaches poll for the fourth consecutive week after improving to 12-0. Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks (11-1) were ranked No. 2, with Kim Mulkey’s LSU Tigers (14-0) at No. 3. Notre Dame (No. 4, 10-2) and the USC Trojans (No. 5, 11-1) rounded out the top five.
The SEC had seven teams in the top 25, including the Texas Longhorns (12-1) at No. 6 and the Oklahoma Sooners (11-1) at No. 10.
Alabama opens SEC play on Jan. 2 when they welcome the Florida Gators to Coleman Coliseum.
