The Cincinnati Bengals finally receiving an official 2020 schedule might command the attention momentarily.
But A.J. Green’s health, contract status and pairing with Joe Burrow sit in the background as critical elements of Year 2 for the Zac Taylor era.
Green himself has addressed at least one of those factors in a new interview, revealing he’s already been in contact with Burrow and is ready to link up.
From Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com:
“We’ve been talking back and forth. We were talking (texting?) yesterday and I know he wants to get together and throw somewhere. I told him wherever he is, we’ll come to him. I don’t know where, when, how. It’s all who can fly where and when. He’s the quarterback. He makes his location and we have to get there.”
Green also says the ankle that ruined last season is healthy and — per the usual — didn’t have much to say about his contract situation, which features a mid-July deadline for an extension.
But on the Burrow front, Green’s taking a leadership role while handing the controls to his new franchise quarterback. It’s exactly what the Bengals had envisioned from their veteran franchise leader and is nothing but a good thing for Burrow, whose NFL career starts as an underdog at home.
Green will play a critical role in some of the Bengals’ top schedule storylines and it’s clear even an unorthodox offseason won’t stop the star wideout from helping his new quarterback.
