A huge hole is at QB for Air Force

Air Force quarterback Donald Hammond III is no longer a cadet in good standing, as reported by the Colorado Springs Gazette. The school confirmed via a comment to the outlet:

“Donald Hammond is no longer a cadet in good standing and cannot represent the academy in outside activities.”

This is a huge blow for Air Force football because this likely means that Hammond is not going be suiting up this football season. Prior athletes who have had the unfortunate distinction of not being in good standing did not participate in their upcoming year.

Also, as for why Hammond is no longer in good standing has not been released by the school.

Hammond was MW Wire’s 2019 offensive player of the year and many publications had him on preseason all-conference teams for the Mountain Weast and he was on the preseason Davey O’Brien watch list.

Last year, Hammond had 13 touchdown passes and 13 on the ground leading the Falcons to a Cheeze-It Bowl win over Washington State, an 11-2 record and finished 22nd in the Associated Press and 23rd in the coaches poll.

Now with Hammond gone, it removes Air Force’s best weapon. Outside of last year, the Falcons have always needed depth at quarterback, but that is not the case this year as Isiah Sanders who transferred to Stanford and Mike Schmidt graduated.

The quarterback unit will be largely untested with a group of unknowns. Leading the way as the No. 2 after spring practice was junior Warren Bryan but there also are a trio of sophomores Max Massingale, Haaziq Daniels, Zachary Larrier, and junior Chance Stevenson who could be in the running.

During spring practices, Hammond was confident in any of the other quarterbacks if he could not play.

“If I were to go down, we’d still be in good hands,” Hammond told The Colorado Springs Gazette.

This is a huge blow if Hammond is unable to return to the field and likely will take Air Force out of consideration to win the Mountain West.
