Last I checked, April fools came and went months ago, but one media outlet wants to keep the jokes running through the summer.
Mike Craven of TexasFootball.com took a pulse of how the FBS teams in the Lone Star State are stacking up ahead of next season. Craven assessed how each group is situated with spring football in the rearview mirror in a football landscape that sees tons of player movement with the transfer portal.
In his eyes, Texas A&M clocks in at No. 6 on the post-spring FBS power rankings. Here’s his reasoning behind the Aggies’ placement:
“No team in Texas is more talented than the Aggies. Even with all the departures through the portal, Texas A&M can line up with every team in the nation and not feel overwhelmed in terms of pure talent in the starting lineup.
The questions about Texas A&M pertain more to culture and consistency. Can Jimbo Fisher and Bobby Petrino play nice in tense moments? Will the defense play with enough urgency to stop the run? Does the offensive line improve? The SEC is a tough place to answer those questions on the fly.
For reference, the Maroon and White are more than a handful of spots below the Texas Longhorns, who sit atop Craven’s list. Interestingly enough, the Aggies are behind No. 2 (yes, No. 2!) ranked UTSA, No. 3 Texas Tech, No. 4 SMU, and No. 5 TCU.

The Longhorns are considered the consensus favorite in the Big 12 and will see the return of 10 offensive starters, so it’s not a complete shocker to see them ranked so high. In addition, the Horned Frogs are fresh off a National Championship game appearance, so recency bias helps despite the losses of Max Duggan and Quentin Johnston.
But let’s address the gigantic elephant in the room: the Road Runners at number two. Above the Aggies, Horned Frogs, and the Red Raiders. Seriously?
We can recognize these power rankings for what they truly are: an assessment based mainly on 2022 success. The Aggies, which boasts one of the better defensive fronts in the nation and a talented offensive core that should improve with a new offensive coordinator, can stake the claim of being better situated than SMU, Texas Tech, and even TCU.
But, as is familiar with many power rankings throughout the summer lull, A&M’s underwhelming 5-7 campaign last year continues to take precedence versus future success heading into a new season.
The summer days will be long, and there will be no shortage of A&M disrespect, but make no mistake that the Aggies will use these rankings, for they are: whiteboard material. However, this team is equipped for a bounce-back season, so keep these receipts handy when it comes time to reap what these outlets have sown.
