After years of subpar coverage defenses, the Steelers finally got it right

In a rare in-season move, the Steelers traded their 2020 first-round and fourth-round picks, and 2021 sixth-round to the Miami Dolphins for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. While it was a steep price to pay, I would say it has been worth it.

From the moment Fitzpatrick stepped on the field in Week 3, he made his presence known and helped turn the secondary into one of the league’s most respected units.

While Fitzpatrick did allow his first four targets to be completed in Weeks 3 and 4 for 14 and 19 yards, he picked off 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garrapolo in his first game as a Steeler.

In Week 8 versus the Dolphins, both of Fitzpatrick’s targets resulted in interceptions. Opponents rightfully took notice of his impact and ceased throwing in Fitzpatrick’s direction. He had no targets in Weeks 9 to 12, and 14 and 17.

In 542 coverage snaps on the season, Fitzpatrick allowed 89 yards on 17 targets and eight completions. He added to that five interceptions and five forced incompletions for a PFF coverage grade of 87.6.
