After Stanford loss, CU Buffs have tough projected matchup in latest ESPN Women’s Bracketology

There will be more basketball for the Buffs women

Anytime Colorado women’s basketball and Stanford get together it’s typically a great game. But with the Buffs losing a pair of impact players, Friday’s Pac-12 Tournament semifinals ended in a lopsided Cardinal win, 71-45.

Fortunately, CU’s season is expected to continue in the NCAA Tournament and head coach JR Payne expects both Sila Finau and Tameiya Sadler to recover in time. A full-strength Buffs squad, at least in my mind, could be deadly.

The latest ESPN Women’s Basketball Bracketology was released on Saturday morning and it had the Buffs as a projected No. 9 seed matching up with No. 8 seed Florida Gulf Coast in the first round. Although FGCU isn’t a Power 5 school, the Eagles are currently ranked No. 22 in the AP Poll after a stellar 26-2 (15-1 ASUN) regular season; that would be a really tough matchup. And if the Buffs win in this projected realm, they would next play No. 1 seed NC State, barring a Wolfpack loss to the No. 16 seed.

This all will likely change, however, as many teams are still in the midst of their conference tournaments.

Selection Sunday for the women’s Big Dance is March 13 and the first round will be March 18-19 — plenty of time for the Buffs to get healthy and prepare for their first NCAA Tournament since 2013.
