Anthony Richardson took over for Emory Jones in the second half against Florida State and led Florida to a comeback win over its rival. After the game, reporters asked Richardson about his future with the Gators and he had just one thing to say.
“Yeah, I’m a Gator,” Richardson said, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
He reiterated the phrase when pressed about whether or not he’d be at Florida next year. While somewhat cryptic, the Gainesville native said that he’d continue to compete and work hard regardless of the coach at Florida. It sounds like Richardson is a Gator for now, but this will likely be far from the last time he’s asked about a potential transfer.
Jones is far from ready for the NFL and should be back next year barring a transfer of his own. That means Richardson would likely spend more time competing with Jones depending on who Florida hires as the new coach. If that’s the case, Richardson said he learned a lot about being a team player this year and has an almost unusual bond with Jones. It’s an unusual trait to find in a quarterback this day in age, but it’s a welcomed one by both former and future coaches.
With the win over Florida State, Florida should receive an invitation to a bowl game. Interim coach Greg Knox wouldn’t commit to either Jones or Richardson as a starter yet. Florida has thrown 18 interceptions this year, but the lion’s share belongs to Jones (including three against FSU this week). It wouldn’t be surprising to see Richardson start or play a decent amount in that game, but Jones has more bowl experience.
