The Cincinnati Bengals were major underdogs going into Sunday’s AFC championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Just don’t tell KMBC in Kansas City.
Following Cincinnati’s stunning victory over the Chiefs, the outlet posted a tweet that instantly went viral because it included the following text:
“AGAINST ALL ODDS: We were never supposed to be here. We were never meant to make it this far. But against all odds, we did. What a season. Thank you for the incredible ride. We will always be #ChiefsKingdom”
As of this writing, the tweet had roughly 3,000-plus quote tweets. Or as the kids would say it, was getting ratio’d.
The Bengals weren’t just major underdogs in that game. They hadn’t won a playoff game in 31 years entering this year’s postseason. That they even entered the postseason was a minor miracle considering the team had cobbled together just six wins over the first two years of Zac Taylor’s tenure and Joe Burrow was coming back on a reconstructed knee as a sophomore.
The Chiefs, on the other hand, had Patrick Mahomes and a laundry list of recent accomplishments. A rough patch early in the season where Mahomes threw a few too many unlucky picks seems to be the reason for the tweet.
But if one were to predict where this tweet would come from after the AFC title game, one would’ve figured it would be from the greater Cincinnati area:
