AFC North watch: Bengals free agent, Ravens roster moves and more

A quick look around the AFC North at the division rivals of the Cleveland Browns

A quick look around what is happening with the Cleveland Browns three foes in the AFC North…

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals have a few prime players hitting free agency, but the team’s own website expects Cincinnati to have an “all-out effort” to retain Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Green and RB Joe Mixon.

Keeping Green would be an interesting move. Now 32 (in July) and coming off an injury-shortened year, the 7-time Pro Bowler’s best days are likely behind him. But he can still help young QB Joe Burrow, the presumptive No. 1 pick, and provide an alpha male in the young wide receiver room.

Baltimore Ravens

In a bit of a surprise move, the Ravens have cut veteran safety Tony Jefferson. The move saves Baltimore about $7 million in much-needed salary cap room, but it’s a blow to the Ravens defense. Jefferson started 36 games for Baltimore since 2017 and is one of the NFL’s better run defenders at the safety spot.

Reserve offensive lineman James Hurst has been suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. Hurst played in all 16 games, starting two, in 2019 and has served as Baltimore’s primary starting left guard in recent seasons. He will miss the first four games of 2020.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Antonio Brown continues to stir the Steelers’ pot even though he’s not been with the team since 2018. Brown sounded off — again — at his former team, this time trashing QB Ben Roethlisberger in a radio interview.

I think it was all an act with him,” Brown said via Steelers Wire. “Guys around him could never really see eye to eye … There’s rules, and then there’s Ben.”

It’s the latest in a series of ponderous and oft-embarrassing moves for Brown, who has talked and acted his way out of the NFL.
