The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are looking to become the first team to play in and win a Super Bowl in their own home stadium, as Super Bowl LV will be played at Raymond James Stadium next year.
The script seems almost too perfect for the Bucs — a franchise with a decade-long postseason drought signs the greatest quarterback of all time to their roster and he leads them on a championship run that ends in their own stadium.
But the path to Super Bowl LV won’t be an easy one for Tom Brady and his Buccaneers. Not only will they have to contend with tough teams in the NFC South like the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints, but they’ll face other Super Bowl-contending teams in 2020, like the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs will visit Brady and the Bucs at Raymond James, providing us with hopefully another memorable Brady-Mahomes matchup. And while Adam Schein of NFL.com is a fan of the new-look Bucs, he has the Kansas City Chiefs repeating as Super Bowl champions this season.
Here’s part of Schein’s reasoning:
“Still just 24 years old, Mahomes has been an NFL starter for two seasons. In Year 1, he ran away with league MVP honors after becoming just the second quarterback to hit 50 touchdowns and 5,000 yards passing, joining Peyton Manning. In Year 2, he was named Super Bowl MVP after leading the Chiefs on three fourth-quarter touchdown drives against the 49ers’ vaunted defense. And there’s still plenty of room for growth, which is staggering, considering everything he’s accomplished in just 36 NFL starts. (By the way, if Dee Ford hadn’t lined up offsides in the 2018 AFC title game, Mahomes would already be a back-to-back champ.)”
Schein also likes what he sees from the defense, especially after the team reached a new deal with Chris Jones.
Thee’s no question that Mahomes and the Chiefs will be favorites to repeat in 2020. But as we’ve learned over the past two decades, you can never count out Tom Brady.
