The build-up to the 2020 NFL Draft has been dreadful — especially for Miami Dolphins fans. This is the event that fans have had circled on their calendar since April of 2019, when the team underwent their first NFL Draft under new management and effectively admitted they were facing a long rebuild with their personnel moves.
They’ve made it. It is officially April of 2020 and the NFL Draft is three weeks away. But everything we thought we knew about the Dolphins’ 2020 draft plans is suddenly going up in smoke. Or at least so it seems. ESPN’s Adam Schefter made an appearance on ESPN programming yesterday to provide some guest analysis of Todd McShay’s latest mock draft. And when the Dolphins came on the clock, Schefter seemed to casually drop a bomb about Miami’s draft aspirations.

“I’m not so sure the Dolphins are all in on Tua (Tagovailoa) the way that people think,” said Schefter. “And it will be interesting to think what they will do at 5 if he is there and Miami doesn’t trade up, move around — whatever it may be. I’m not so sure that Tua will be their guy.”
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard such suggestions, but it is probably the most direct pushback yet that the Dolphins may have other plans at quarterback. Of course, those who have married themselves to the idea of Tua Tagovailoa as a Miami Dolphin will be quick to remind that this is “smokescreen” season and that the Dolphins are throwing other teams off their scent with leaks like this. Perhaps that is true. But between the report from the Miami Herald that the Dolphins are going to attempt to trade up for Joe Burrow in recent days and now this from Schefter, there sure is a lot of smoke.
At what point does smoke signal a fire?
