Adam Gase not second-guessing his play-calling after Jets’ loss to Bills

Adam Gase is not second-guessing the Jets’ offensive gameplan against the Bills in Week 1.

The Jets’ offense was nothing short of horrendous against the Bills in Week 1, but Adam Gase is not one to second-guess his gameplan.

Buffalo limited the Jets to 52 rushing yards and made things tough on Sam Darnold with constant pressure on the pocket. Other than Jamison Crowder’s 69-yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter, New York’s offense was stagnant and ineffective.

Gase isn’t chalking up the Jets’ porous offensive performance to any sort of error on his end, though.

“With what [Buffalo] was calling defensively? No,” Gase said Monday when asked if there was anything he would have done differently.

Considering Buffalo’s defense is one of the best units in football, Gase’s words have a little bit of merit. When Sean McDermott’s defense is firing on all cylinders, it is an extremely tough group to beat.

With that being said, Gase failed to make the adjustments necessary to move the ball against an elite defense. Calling screen passes on two-minute drills with no timeouts isn’t going to get the job done against the Bills — or any other team in the NFL.

Gase and the Jets’ coaching staff did not put Darnold or anyone on their offense in a position to succeed. Darnold was far from good in the game, but he also didn’t get much help from his head coach’s calls.

Gase acknowledged he has to do more to get Darnold in a rhythm early in the game, so at least he is aware that something has to change moving forward. If it doesn’t, Week 2 against the 49ers will feature more of the same offensive incompetence.
