Rankings and lists season continues to reign supreme as we enter the driest time of the year in terms of NFL news.
Last week, rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon was named Seattle’s breakout candidate of the year for the 2023 season by NFL.com. Meanwhile, over at Pro Football Focus they have a different player in mind for that honor. They have chosen second-year right tackle Abe Lucas.
“Seattle’s rookie offensive tackle duo received a lot of praise during last season. However, while left tackle Charles Cross’s performance tailed off a bit, Lucas finished the season strong with an overall PFF grade of 68.4, 39th among offensive tackles. He allowed pressure on 5.1% of his pass-blocking snaps, 28th out of 96 offensive tackles.”
In 2022 PFF gave Lucas a 69.6 pass blocking grade, 65.1 in run blocking and 68.5 overall. That ranks him No. 39 in the league.
Overall Lucas had an exceptional rookie year, despite his performance trending down somehwat in the second half of the season. If he and left tackle Charles Cross can make the second-year leap it will give a secure foundation for what could be a top-five offensive unit.
