A Warm Welcome to Buffaloes Wire!

It still wasn’t a clip. However, give our new teammates a warm welcome!

A few weeks ago we were happy to welcome our new colleagues at Rutgers Wire to the family of college wire sites.  Today we’re happy to welcome another member to that ever-growing group as we say hello to Buffaloes Wire who will cover everything regarding Colorado athletics.

Notre Dame’s history with Colorado is fairly brief but plenty memorable for there only being five games ever being played between the two programs.

Gerry Faust led Notre Dame squads routed Colorado 27-3 and 55-14 in 1983 and 1984 respectively as those games remain the only two regular season contests played between the programs.

The two would meet again in the Orange Bowl to conclude the 1989 season. No. 1 Colorado became the fourth top-10 team Notre Dame beat that season after a 21-6 Irish victory on New Year’s Day.

A year later the two met in Miami again for what remains one of the most heartbreaking and controversial moments in Notre Dame history.  Trailing 10-9 with 1:05 to go the Irish were set to get the ball back after forcing a Colorado punt.  Waiting to return it was the most exciting player in college football at the time, Raghib “Rocket” Ismail.

Ismail fielded the punt just inside the 10, quickly broke a few tackles, and was off to the races to give Notre Dame the improbable late lead.

Only one problem: there was laundry.

A flag was thrown for a clipping penalty that you still can’t convince me actually occurred and the return was called back.  Colorado stopped the Irish and held onto the 10-9 victory which helped them split the national championship that year with Georgia Tech.

The two met again to conclude the 1994 season in the Fiesta Bowl, a game 6-4-1 Notre Dame had no business earning a trip to.  No. 4 Colorado blasted the Irish that afternoon in a 41-24 rout that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated as Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam rushed for three scores.

That’s the brief history between Notre Dame and Colorado in football.  I’ve never been to a game in Boulder but the sites appear to be some of the best in all of college football.

Welcome to the squad, Buffaloes Wire.  We’re excited to have another rival of USC‘s to help us poke fun at their has-been football program.

Now please don’t throw anymore unnecessary laundry our way.
